for imaging tranparencies a backlight is neeeded. this unit it a optional
available for most scanners (often called transparaency adaptor etc) it
replaces the lid. with it isntalled the scanner can still image paper too.
(this is still really hobbyist stuff)

I like Canon and dislike HP mainly due to their support sites.
I'd not be suprised to find their internal hardware is all coming
from the same source,

i expect special scanners for scanning transparencies (negatives and
slides) may be avaialble that give better resolution than the typical
flatbed scanner gives as those media give better resolution than paper...
i also don't expect them to be easily affordable.

the easiest way to get more resolution from a negative is to get it printed.
