I've not tried FM on 75m, but have heard of some using "sliver" mode on 40m.
Beisell functions are quite important in FM communication, and there was some
talk about some of the local AM community moving to FM, when the power
limitation for AM stations came about - the FCC said "ALL MODES were to be
limited to 1500w PEP OUTPUT". A little math shows that around 375w out of
carrier and 100% audio develops 1500w PEP output. So, the KW-1's, Johnson
500's, etc were 'limited' at that point and the talk was of chaning to FM, to
run 1500w output. FM output is class C, there's no amplitude change, so those
rigs that were running a kW DC input could remain, basically shut down the
modulators and just inject a little audio to the VFO, and be on FM.
Selective fade however, plays a -huge- part in recieving an FM signal, as
you've found out

Can try... CW starting Saturday night (if I'm here - schedule is so screwed
up now, I don't know where I'll be) at 2000 CST (0200Z ?) at 3700 to 3705,
then at 2030 (0230Z, if that's right) on fone at 3755 to 3765kHz.
   73 = Best Regards
