That what I did (I had to to activate it and let it start downloading
updates), except it has its own subnet now, not my local LAN.

I really don't expect any degrade in this case, at least I hope not --
there's a lot of computers that don't have internet access (for security
reasons).  I can't think that Microsoft would make that much of a mistake.
