        Dear OS/2 Renegader's!

Patrick, with Cott's permission, has authorized the establishment of
an OS/2 Beta team to produce and test an OS/2 native 32-bit version of
Renegade. Beta applications are now being accepted and screened for inclusion
in the team. DO NOT contact Cott or Patrick! They will NOT respond to your
request other than to tell you to contact me.

        The requirements are as follows:

        1. You must run Renegade.
        2. You must run OS/2 ver 3.0 (Warp) or above.
        3. You must donate a minimum of $5 towards the purchase of
on OS/2 Pascal Compiler. You may also donate additional
money in someone else's name (gift)

Some of you may balk at the contribution requirement, but Patrick
doesn't have an OS/2 compiler and will not be purchasing one in the near
future. If we want the most out of our systems by running a native
application, we will have to finance the compiler for him. It's not fair for
us to ask him to spend money to make OUR lives easier. ;-)

I was asked to make it perfectly clear that the purchase of Virtual
Pascal does not mean the port will be successful; on the contrary, we will be
taking a risk. But what are we really risking? Five bucks is all. If the
project fails (and I seriously doubt it will, in my opinion), we can say we
tried our best. If the project is successful, then we've put our money and
efforts where our mouth is and truly supported the software and placed it back
into competition.

When the subject of the compiler was broached to Patrick, he quickly
obtained demo copies of the two competing OS/2 Pascal compilers.

Here is what Patrick had to say about the compiler's:
        =========================================================
"Though I spent some time last night (about 5 hours,
downloading, setting up, etc) working with the latest
betas of both.. and VirtualPascal looks like it would
work a lot easier... some of the sample stuff I compiled
seem easier to convert under VP than under SP...

admittedly, SP has a new release pending, but VP seems far
        easier..

For example... I compiled 'Eds Pascal Beautifier' under
both... both required a couple chhanges to the names of
        a few variables..(same variable).

SP required me to change the size of a variable, VP had
a unit to include that prevented the need.

SP compiled to 60k, VP to 18k... a -significant- difference
... and from the test figures I have seen done by others,
        the size difference is consitant..

Also, fyi, the SP version crashed with an error, and the VP
        one worked like a charm..."
        ===========================================================

Again, without the donation of a compiler, we won't have an OS/2
version. Those who donate will become part of the beta team by
default and will have access to the OS/2 version well in advance
of a public release.

Please follow these steps to apply:

Step 1: Netmail or Email me FIRST with your application. The
                 slots are limited.
My Fido node number is 1:3634/37 and my Inet address is
                 donc{at}mail.apcnet.com

Once you have been pre-approved, you may go to step 2.

Step 2: Send your application by snail mail to:

                 Don Cranford
                 Thor's Retreat/2 BBS
                 2657 Dumbarton Rd
                 Fayetteville, NC 28306-2715

Please include the following in your application:

        Name:
        Name: as configured in Renegade
        Address:
        Voice phone:
        Net address:
        Password: (IMPORTANT)
Internet address (if you have one):

I will acknowledge each response as it arrives. Charles Bowman and I
will be handling the distribution of the software when it is ready. A beta
copy, when it is ready, will be placed on hold here for you to pick up
(passworded) and you will be notified that it is ready. If you are on the
Intenet and have an email account, a UUEncoded copy will be forwarded to you.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me voice at:
        910-426-1303

For those of you worried about someone running off with your
hard-earned cash, be advised that it is a felony to defraud you in this
manner. Be also advised that the only guarrantee will be the purchase of
Virtual Pascal/2 for the purpose of *attempting* to port the BBS software
(Renegade) to the OS/2 platform.

        Signed:

Charles Bowman (Co-Administrator)

[Note: any money not used will be donated to the American Cancer Society as
should be in the spirit of free software]
