> The coroner is only involved if the doctor refuses to sign the > death certificate. Wasn't she being treated by a GP? JT> She was in hospital for about two weeks before she died. JT> (originally went in for lungs full of fluid) And th hopital registrar wouldn't sign the Death Certificate? Weird. > If *I* came home to my braindead but usually harmless uncle and > caught him masturbating for my young kids, I'd do exactly what > the mother did and beat the living shit out of him. Actually, I'm > not as nice a person as the mother... I'd have dumped to old > bastard long since, and I'd like to think that when the cops > arrived, I'd have my lawyer waiting for them and say absolutely > *NOTHING*; let them try to make their case without evidence, and > then tell a carefully-rehearsed cock-and-bull story for the first > time in court. JT> How do you explain the wheely bin then? The beauty of our stupid law is that you do not have to explain anything. It's for you to know and them to find out your story when you finally get to court. The reality is that anything you say to a cop can only hurt you. Take the example of Lindy Chamberlain and the Pommie gorl with the vanished boyfriend... both in the Northern Territory. Lindy talked her way into prison and the Pommie said nothing without her lawyer, and *nothing at all* to the papers. They were equally unlikely stories (a dingo took my baby; a mysterious stranger took my boyfriend), but the outcomes were different. One did five years, the other walked and sold her story later. Our law is set up to protect the guilty. An innocent will try hard to explain their innocence, the guilty knows to keep his mouth shut until a lawyer can rehearse a good story for him. JT> Yeah, but you're only appeasing the media frenzy, where someone JT> has to get blamed. If you say nothing, who can the media quote? Australian libel laws are brilliant! You can make real money out of the Media. Take the case of the swimming coach and the girl-bitch. They're fighting it in the Media, and the Media is freed of libel so long as they only quote each in turn. Guilty or not, the coach should have sued the bitch for defamation, and that chops it off, dead. If Ray Martin opens his mouth, you're on $100,000 from Kerry Packer whether what he says is true or not! I wish someone would accuse me of something... Can you remember Neville Wran. He *always* sued, and over twenty years he ended up three-million in front - a nice little earner. Scientology is the same. My favourite with Nev was the time a paper accused him of using the Law to make money... and he sued them! And won... > The law is supposed to protect the law-abiding. It has no other > purpose. JT> No, sadly, the law has nothing to do with justice. It's just JT> about minimising your losses. That is, do you stand to loose JT> less by going to court or not? Justice? That's not the purpose of Law. Law is meant to prevent us taking the law into our *own* hands to get justice. It's meant to keep things orderly... and protect the law-abiding. In fact, it does not do that at all. It protects those able to hire good lawyers, who then manipulate the system to their client's advantage.
