they are disgneed to image things that are flat against the glass.
things that are close to it will register, I've never tried to copy
something that was more than about 1/2 inch from the glass,     but others
have photocipied their hands,faces, and other body parts.
things get darker the further you go from the glass.

photocopiers use a very intense light, focussed on a narrow strip of the
document being copied. the reflection it gets from the ceiling, and the
ambient light in the room isn't intensee enough to register.
