Not hard at all.


I'd use something from the NatSemi simple-switcher line.

All of these devices are rated for 3A and have adjustable output.

LM2576 switches at 52khz, cost should be about $3.50 - $5.00

LM2585 or LM2586 switch at 100khz, cost could be about $8.00 - $10.00

LM2596 switches at about 150khz, cost could be about $4.00 - $5.00


There are others too.
