I'm an NC, and I did it.  None of the non-EC calls I've gotten in years have 
been "legit" until this last week, when a youngster with an RPI modem applied 
for a node number.  I had to make special arrangements for him to connect 
with me.
I don't know what the situation is in your area, but around here non-EC 
modems were almost extinct until the damned RPI garbage became popular 
briefly.
