 Think about it. The scanner in the Copier puts Black toner in the
places that DO NOT reflect Light(the black print on the paper being
copied) on it's copy. With the lid open and nothing on the glass nothing
in reflected back to the pickup sensor. 
In theory you get a full black page. :-)
