sqrt(long)/200   should be about right for your DVD player.

hmm, it prolly wouldn't work too well if there was...

 A series regulator like an LM350 will be not be noticably less efficient
 than running the DVD off half the cells and won't lead to uneven
 discharge. don't forget an insulated (or shielded) heatsink as it'll be
 "live" with a few volts
