could it be sampling?

Hell, it could have just been a background wash for the hell of it.  Didn't 
sound like sampling, it seemed to proceed as if it were just the song being 
played, but the copy I heard had a really bad thumping in and out, like a 
mostly erased-but-not-quite-tape with the faint sound of the song coming in 
and out of the background.  The in and out and the thumps made it tough to 
follow so I can't say very well.
