| subject: | Re: SCSI vs IDE probs. |
The keyboard smoked while Ivan typed to All: IW> I was wondering about some of the strange differences between IDE and IW> SCSI and if i can fix some noticable differences. Hopefully I can help a little at least. IW> History: IW> I have had 5 SCSI drives on my A3000 for about 3 years. Green envy.... :) IW> I now have transferred everything to my A4000, i have 2 IDE drives. Green turns deeper shade... :) IW> OK. I suspect this has more to do with the 040 rather than the HD change. Can be a pain when copying several files at once. IW> When i formatted the new IDE drives, i did select directory cache IW> which i do not think i did on the SCSI drives, could this be a IW> problem? Directory cacheing will enable you to read the directory listing damn fast. That's what it's there for. But I suspect you'll find that the slowness of writing files is a demonstration of the difference between the interfaces. IW> What's the safest addbuffers amount you should have. If i have 100 IW> buffers set in HDtoolbox on each drive, should i still addbuffers in IW> startup-sequence and how much is too much, i have plenty of memory IW> (about 10 meg free after bootup) Fill yer boots! I don't think there's any real limit of buffers you should or could add, but whether it will help, I'm afraid I'm not sure. I suspect you will notice a difference when you are writing large files if you have lots of buffers, but for lots of little files, I don't think it will help much. Understatement of the year.
