Directory cacheing will enable you to read the directory listing damn fast.
That's what it's there for. But I suspect you'll find that the slowness of
writing files is a demonstration of the difference between the interfaces.

Fill yer boots! I don't think there's any real limit of buffers you should
or could add, but whether it will help, I'm afraid I'm not sure. I suspect
you will notice a difference when you are writing large files if you have
lots of buffers, but for lots of little files, I don't think it will help
much.
