Well they were great for their time.  Heck, Apogee just released a side
scroller game, Stargunner.  I'm not saying side scrollers are bad I'm just
saying the industry is just so intoxicated with 3D that I don't think
there's any hope of stopping this juggernaut.  Everything from 3D first
person games to 3D fighters to the newfangled 3D accelerator cards, of which 
I might buy one.  They're just obsessed with it.
