The original message contains one little bug. Instead of

            msg );

there should be

  fprintf ( fout, "%s%4.4d%c: %s", compname, i + 1, buf[toc[i]],
            msg );

without trailing \r\n. Otherwise extra linefeed will be erroneously placed
into the output.
