Well since all 3 players work fine on W2K and on XP but not on Vista with
the exact same files (same codec profile), they play all resolutions on the
other OS, yet on vista they degrade to black screen with sound only for the
high def video, I still think it's part of the PMP system. I admit that's
not the only possibility, but I believe it is the most likely.
Media player classic doesn't install, it's just a single exe file. I
promise, it won't mess up your system in the least, you have to tell it to
associate extensions if you want it to take them over. I would really
appreciate it if you would look to see if it does this on your vista
system, because if it is PMP acting up then it needs to get back to the
right group so they can fix it.

There is no protected content for it to apply. As you note, Windows
Media Player works so you can clearly display the content on your system.
You would have to look at the encoder documentation to see to what
profile applies. I believe it refers to not just bitrate but also
variations such as whether the encoding uses a constant or variable
bitrate, resolution, and other quality factors. It may be that Movie Maker
doesn't expose this or does so in a simplified manner. I noticed this when
I played in the past with Windows Media Encoder.
I don't have a system on to which to install media player classic and I
don't like installing random software on my production systems.
