Allan Jenoff gave up a long homer to Otis Nixon and said:
AJ> but couldn't survive in the NL. It doesn't matter why he wouldn't be
AJ> playing, the point is he wouldn't be playing.
Gee, Matt Williams seems to get time in the NL.
AJ> amazing not a single manager in the AL agrees with you. Not one of
AJ> them thinks a DH worthy of starting in a defensive position. I
AJ> wonder
AJ> who's right?
NOT ONE? I'm sorry but either you've never watched the AL play or you don't
even have an idea who Cecil Fielder or Frank Thomas are. Back when the DH was
introduced and a manager had a pair (and was allowed to use them), both
players would have been penciled in at DH.
AJ> No, he'd be out of baseball. If he could play a defensive position,
AJ> he'd be there already. And if he were capable fo playing in the NL,
AJ> he'd be there.
Players are routinely shifted from the outfield to first base or from center
to left.
AJ> Given that the NL is defensively stronger than the AL, that's weird
AJ> reasoning.
Defensively stronger? I think you haven't been watching too many MLB games if
you hold that belief.
AJ> order them to bunt. Sure they don't have as many at bats as other
AJ> players and so are not as likely to be as good. But pitchers can
AJ> hit.
If they could hit, they'd be hitting better than .147. For that kind of
hitting, Baltimore sat their "shortstop of the future" back on the pines.
AJ> I really have to mention Ruth? At least in the NL there is proof the
AJ> managers are watching the game. Most AL managers seem to go to sleep
AJ> once the game starts.
Puhleeze. For ONE player, you want to elevate the whole position. Even WITH
Ruth, pitchers have ALWAYS been the worst hitters in baseball.
AJ> will in the AL. Obviously, the NL thinks more of the batting prowess
AJ> of its pitchers than the AL does.
No, they don't. If they did, they wouldn't be sacrificing as much as they do.
If they thought so much of their "batting prowess (guffaw)", they wouldn't be
pinch hitting for them like they do.
