Hello Tom!
Friday July 05 1996, Tom Moore babbled to Rob Appleyard:
-> I have not really READ this echo in a long while. Look through the
-> messages you see here and you'll find plenty of talk from the "bass
-> hounds".
Hardly......read the current messages. :)
-> In fact, I'd say a majority of the mail in here is from, to and
-> about that subject and a LOT of it is full of bad information (port size
-> doesn't matter) and bad spelling. It is easy to see how the current crop
-> of car audio fans get lumped into a generalized catagory of cement heads.
Would it be any different if someone who shelled out alot of money on their
car sterso system got in here and said the same thing about Ronnie Montrose
who played through 6 vintage Fender Twin amps (for stage volume) in a room
that only seated 600 people or so? Wouldn't you think that a guitarist on
the same stage who played through 24 12" Celestians and 11 heads was kinda
over-doing it? :) The analogy is there between live sound and car audio. I
don't lean toward one side or the other, as I work currently with both.
-> I myself am aware of what might be involved in the creation of a
-> "competition" mobile audio rig. It's just that it falls into a slot I
-> file away as useless. Once something is loud, does it need to be louder?
In some areas of car audio there is the rush of having your system cranking
up aver 150 decibals. (Not for me, mind you) In other areas if you have a
good curve and good staging up front on your highs and mid-bass you have
something to be proud of.
The analogy.......I like quality sound in my car and I like some intense
3.15K and clean 63s. You like one, other people may like the other. I like
both. :)
-> Once it sounds good, does it need to sound better? I answer "no" and
-> "yes" to those two questions. Loud for the sake of loud does nothing at
-> all for me. Great sound, however, rocks my boat every time.
I agree with you there. I'd much rather have a clean sound. At times I like
to have it so loud that I could picture myself standing stage right directly
in front of 200 Flashlights. (tm) :> That doesn't mean I want to shake the
car next to me though!
-> Competition
-> car audio, for the most part, is ONLY concerned with loud. Max db at
-> any cost.
Only to a point.
-> Not much of a goal as no human could actually sit in one of these
-> mobile earthquakes and say they 'enjoy' the audio (unless they are nuts,
-> deaf or both).
That's pretty accurate! OTOH, I've known some people who would spend
thousands on a car system, have it hit so hard it was unbearable, then sell
it. They satisfied themselves I guess.
-> requires a fat wallet, skill and devotion, but not necessarily a good
r.
Well......I use the same Audio-Control RTA for checking the curve as we used
at the Gin Blossoms/Spin Doctors concert. :) There is definitly a degree of
quality involved.
-> Bonnie gets paid good bux for her good ear (as do I - sometimes). Do
-> you see why there is a rift?
I wish I had gotten into live sound much earlier. I really enjoy it but I'm
a little late to get so deep into the engineering apsect. I'll just stick
with the monitor desk and doing the loadins/outs. :)
-> Just my opinion.
Mine too!
