Well I've said this before and I'll say it again..
It's always wise to have medicine stocks on hand in case of emergency..
however you should ALWAYS consult the vet beforehand.
The point of having stocks on hand is of course in case of emergency.. and
after talking to the vet you administer something to help ease the crisis
until he/she gets that to treat..
Of course in case of DIRE emergency.. well this is something you should also
talk to your vet about ahead of time.. however I've seen two that went into
severe colics and were treated first they were so drastic. One suruvived one
didn't (a twisted gut).
