Whilst listening to some old music, I stumbled on some songs that sound
like they fit into the Prog-Rock category, though they are not by
artists who specialize in Prog-Rock exclusively. If you are
tired of searching for obscure albums by obscure artists to find
Prog-Rock recordings, take a break and try lisenting to some of these
easier to find examples of the genre.
1. From "Jesus Christ -- Superstar": As everyone who's heard it knows,
this work contains a wide variety of musical styles including old Tin
Pan Alley influences. The song "Gethsemane" uses a non-standard chord
pattern, and in the bridge, the time signature changes from 4/4 to 5/4.
I think this is a Prog-Rock surprise.
2. From Bonnie Tyler's "Faster Than the Speed of Night": Most of her
work with Jim Steinman seems to fit the pop/dance category. But her hit
song "Total Eclispe of the Heart" might surprise you if you listen to it
closely. I think that the overall operatic sound is quite similar to
some of Queen's work. The mix of tempos also sounds rather "proggish",
especially the juxtaposition of a high tempo beat from the drum
synthesiser with a half tempo overlay from the background singers.
To those who claim that Prog-Rock is unpopular, I have to respond that
there is great deal more Prog-Rock out there from artists who aren't
Prog-Rock specialists than you may realize.
