You selected "return error code to program" in the hard error handler
  dialogue (or full-screen VIO popup).

The "return error code to program", "end
program/command/operation",
"retry command or operation" choices are direct descendents of the old
"abort/retry/fail" selections in PC-DOS 4.0. Sometimes the old
terminology is used in those parts of the documentation with the longest
  lineage.
