WS> Now that we're discussing RailRoad monitoring, how 'bout talking about
WS> EOT's or FRED's as they're called? Isn't there a standard frequency
WS> globally, and don't they give data on this freq as to air pressure,
WS> condition of the couplings, etc?
WS>
WS> WHAT ARE EOT's and FRED's?
EOT = End Of Train Device
FRED= Flashing Rear End Device
The FRED is merely a flashing light at the end of the train, that also
helps monitor brake air pressure, etc. I believe, and I could be wrong here,
that the FRED and the EOT are basically the same device.
They don't actually give information on the train's condition. That's
achieved by detectors along the way, which watch the train as it passes.
When the EOT passes the detector, the detector will generally broadcast on
the railroad's main road frequency, and give the name/location of the
detector, how long the train is, how many axles, and if there are any
defects. I heard one say "Integrity Failure" on a coal train in West Chicago
this past week...the first time I've heard anything other than "No Defects".
There are 2 EOT frequencies. 457.9375 is the EOT frequency for all
railroads except for Norfolk Southern. NS adopted an EOT frequency before it
was standardized. Their's is 161.115, I believe.
WS>
WS> Let's put it this way - there are no longer cabooses on freight trains
WS> because of FRED's and EOT's......
I know, and it's a shame.
