Robert Heinlein, affirmed cat lover and grandious cat name giver, if my 
memory serves right, once indicated of having no compunction of shooting 
feral cats, while at the same time would protect his own cats to the nth 
degree.  He would of course begin protecting them by not letting them out 
where they could get into trouble in the first place.
