I've actually *designed* SMPS, and like NS I claimed 85% too... but under the optimum load condition (usually maximum input voltage and maximum load, just before it folds over and stops). At low loads, an SMPS is as bad as 30% efficient. And the little low-voltage ones are worse. I'd eb realyl happy with 60%... and I know how to design coils so they don't saturate, too. JT> Switchmode ends up cheaper. Huge chunks of aluminium and a fan JT> is more expensive than silicon. I know it's cheaper! That's why I've actually used them in mass production. On the other hand, the *first* one cost about $5,000. How many in David's production run?
