If you're really keen, you might use Wireshark to capture a typical TCP
session. Start capturing, then start the connection. After a minute or so,
close the capture.

The capture should show the opening exchange of TCP SYN packets, to see what
window scaling options etc are offered. The capture should also show traffic
while slow progress, to see if there are missing ACKs etc.

Remember how some with Linux only got slow download from this newsgroup (ISTR).
We guessed that it was due to a packetshaper or similar that was interfering
with the window scaling options.
