People feel obligated to express sympathy to us, and by using these
impersonal responses, they both fill their 'obligation' and avoid being
personal about it. Their own feelings aren't involved that way. When
you are chronicly ill, it can get to the point where you'd rather hear
them say "I don't care" than hear the false sympathy they give you one
more time.
