-=***> Kenneth Newman on the "BEST" ALBUMS <***=-
KN> Hey, no Moody Blues, no Ange. I heard that straight from
KN> Christian Decamps. I had always thought Genesis was their
KN> inspiration, but nope, it was the Moodies. Go now and
KN> figure!
I never thought that Ange had any thing on Genesis. I don't care to compare
the bands, but in many ways, the work that Ange was doing was much more
artistic and creative than Genesis, specially after Peter Gabriel left --
a reason he gave in the in depth interview with Melody Maker.
Ange was more of a keyboard band, whose real inspiration might very well
be a combination of theatre and Jacques Brel, to whom they wrote a song.
It really was an extension of a very theatrical scene that Paris has,
this time with music. MUsicals of any kind have never done well in France,
and when this band came out doing a theatrical thing, on stage, too, it
was a bit of a kick, as well as a creative jolt.
That they were much more inspired by the Moodies is not a surprise, when
one checks their material, which had some serious spiritual connections,
and some very important mystical stuff... but this often gets overseen,
and forgotten, specially in the vein of rock'n'bulls'roll people and
audiences.... But really, listen to the french singers, going as far back
as Edith Piaf and Gilbert Becault... Ange is a serious rock version of
those people, with like theatrical voice too. It's just that we keep thinking
that because we heard it first in Genesis, that they created it... they
didn't. FRUUP was around before them, doing it, for example.
But not to take away from Peter Gabriel and his work. He did something
very special and very good as well.
