JB> yeah, I see that string here too. (inside the execuutable) Inside *which* executable? I looked in scandisk.exe, command.com, io.sys and msdos.sys... nothing! BL> I am confused. Defrag works okay... it's just scandisk. JB> scandisk a floppy on the new computer, Did that... after I *booted* from a floppy. JB> try it with the hard drive unplugged or disabled. I don't understand. If I boot from a floppy there is no PATH. How is the hard drive(s) involved? The problem has to be in the sytem files or in scandisk itself... and since the old computer doesn't mind when I boot from the *same* floppy, doesn't that mean it's in the computer BIOS? BL> And BTW, it's a while since I used this computer in Win311 to BL> write mail. Compared to Win98, is like lightning here in BL> Win311. Win98 is so slooooowww... JB> the upgrade is all smoke and mirrors.... I thought there must be an error in Win98, but Linux is even slower to load files! Does it read the register first, or is it somethign to do with the disk controller? It just sits there for a few seconds the first time you load a new program, then it loads. The next time (when it's already in RAM) it's pretty fast. For instance, if I load Word2000, it probably takes 5 seconds before I see the file on screen. In Win311 using WfW and the same (big) file, it pops up just like that! Less than a second. When you do operations on the file, (paginate for instance) both system are *very* fast.
