To All:
Sadly, I'm here to report that my local BBS is about
to die.
CRS Online, the largest BBS in Toronto, has just been
purchased by a National Internet Service Provider and
will not be offering any BBS related services after
March 31, 1996. They expect everyone to either
switch over to their Internet service or piss off.
So all the feeds to these conferences, whether they
be FIDO, RIME, NANet or others will no longer be
available. Over the years that I've belonged to
these conferences, I've received (and hopefully
given) much good advice and enjoyed many discussions
about life, the universe and everything. No more.
I wonder about the long-term viability of BBSs in
the ever-more Internet dominated world. Not that
the Internet is a *Bad Thing* but is there room for
both to exist on a large scale (as opposed to local,
very specialized or hobby BBSs)? I don't know. True
to the spirit which made BBSing great, I'm sure that
the discussion of this will result in many threads in
all the conferences to which this is posted. Which,
sadly, I will not be able to participate in.
So, to all of you with whom I have 'spoken' over the
past few years, a fond farewell! It has been a slice.
I'll see some of you, no doubt, on USENET. The
audience is larger, but there's a lot of noise as
well. Maybe it will be better as the moderators move
from BBSs to USENET (where they are sorely needed).
Bye!
Phil Stenson
