A competent railfan friend in Sydney, tells me that many of the improvements
made here to XPT power cars, were later retrofitted to the InterCity 125
ower
cars in UK. It seems that exhaust silencing is not one such improvement. An
XPT at full throttle is too darned quiet. I loved the loud shriek in UK, as
HSTs would exit the platform in a lively start.

There are lots of good reasons why a loco driver has to suffer. Keeps him
awake, informs him of serious track defects and gives him a physical, tactile
response to excessive speed.
