Most people probably wouldn't believe the truth about the real geopolitical
state of affairs.  The US media actively tries to downplay/ignore the truly
unpleasant parts of what's going on, and the govt tries to downplay it so
as not to seem alarmist.

If people realized how truly fragile the fabric of civilized society can
be, they'd be dumbfounded.
