Br> I don't know why, but I am feeling a little like a young Br> school-kid who is about to be lambasted in-front of the whole Br> class, as he cautiously approaches his teacher to tell him that Br> he obviously doesn't have a grasp of Br> the fundermentals. Br> If the polar icecaps melting caused more water to flow to the Br> equator, and the spin of the Earth had slowed, wouldn't you Br> need to ADD extra seconds to make up for the time loss ? Christ only knows. Just because I wrote it doesn't mean I thought about it first. FX: thinks... You're wrong. I don't know what's wrong with young people nowadays. You just can't work out the simplest things! I blame fluoride in the water supply. The Earth as it goes spinning around the Sun is a bit short of the full calendar year (like my brain, nowadays). What we *call* a year (365.25000 days) is actually a bit *longer* than a real year (365.24225 days). Therefore, what we call Jan 01 starts to slip back into the real December (according to the Sun), so we have to *add* a second to bring it back. If the Earth rotates a bit slower, the days get longer, and we don't have to add the second as it comes up to 365.25000 days. I'm glad to see that you have trouble with this sort of arse-up logic too.s BTW, this is my third reply. The first one said you were wrong, then I talked myself out of it and wrote a realy crawly apology, but after I had a cup of tea and fed the dog... I got it right (I hope).
