I keep butting in here, but if you want a book in a similar vein to 
"Alias Grace", try "The Maggot" by John Fowles. It's set in 17th 
Century England and deals with a judicial inquiry about a mysterious 
crime.  He really does a masterful job.  I recommend it highly.
