Hi all,
gee this is good, running Linux out of Win98 using VNC and
the Gnome GUI. I'm sorry I wasted so much tiem stuffing around in Suse
and KDE... Suse sux. Not only is it unstable, but it's slow! I've been
blaming Linux and X11... it's KDE that is hopeless. In fact, I'm
tempted to arsehole the Suse distribution entirely, and reload with
Redhat. If they can manage to stuff X11, God knows what other harm
they've done. Fucking Germans!
I solved the queer-colour problem by using 15-bit colour rather than
16 0r 8-bit. Linux is really weird! 8-bit colour was totally stuffed
(I suspect they had the gamma correction all wrong), and 16-bit was
mostly okay, with a surrealistic painting in the borders!
Uniwankers really rave on, and there some was a mention of a 15-bit
video driver (are they kidding, or what?) and it works perfectly! My
mind is blown by the thought that a dickhead who bothered to write a
15-bit driver actually got it right! ROFL!
It seems to work so nicely that I could just boot the Linux box,
load the VNC Xserver, and let it run 24/7 forever (no keyboard, mouse
or video required)... except that a box with a 400W power supply
worries me. How much bloody power does a Pentium take? If it's 200W at
10c/kwh, that's $50 a quarter... half my existing electricity bill.
BTW, I notice that Microsoft has (finally) brought out their SP2
service patch to solve the glaring security holes they put in Win XP,
and *already* hackers have found another two holes! It's nearly time
Gates gave up, and just networked Windows into a Linux box when he
needs to work the net.
Regards,
Bob
