Deighton is giving Bernie better lines now.

  Dicky Cruyer has just swapped sides after building an incredible
plot to explain Fiona's brother-in-law's actions, stealing Bernie's
ideas, and now he asks Bernie what he thinks. "Is this an official
abandonment of the idea that George absconded because of the stock
market crash?" Bernie asks innocently.

  I get the feeling that Bernie has lost patience with the dickheads
around him.... finally, or rather, that Deighton has fully identified
with Bernie now, and is about to put the boot into the dickheads he's
created to confound him.
