I think you may be at odds with the story. In the act of creation
God produced, among other things, the great sea monsters
and wild beasts of every kind, and He saw that this was good.
This would include carnivores, so I don't think you can rule out
death prior to Adam eating from the tree of knowledge. There
is also the tree of life in the middle of the garden to consider.

To Adam and Eve, God's first command was, "Be fertile and
increase, fill the earth and master it..." It would seem children
were also in the plan prior to the apple episode.

If Adam had died in the day he ate the fruit, his death would
have ended that plan for mankind. The consequences
qwebster2 mentions may be in lieu of Adam's sudden
demise. That His plan might succeed, perhaps the Creator
allowed Himself the right to change details as needs warrant,
the right to change His mind. Now, if you find such a concept
disturbing, would you please explain why?
