Hi all,
I've got a problem with my Linux (pronounced Links) links.
On this computer that will become the gateway, I can boot three
systems. Win31 only sees the DOS6 (less than 2Gb) drives; Win98 sees
all the drives but can't read Linux, and Linux sees all. I can access
the Windows drives from Linux, which cleverly created a Mime link to
the real drives, just like the real thing... in all but one respect,
apparently. Linux is so intent on protecting "security" that it makes
the Windows drives read-only, except for ROOT.
If I log on as root, I can root the Windows drives to my heart's
content; I can erase system.ini or users.dat and fuck the registry; I
can run barefoot through the windows files and stuff everything up. So
far, I have resisted the urge... as I resist that urge when in your
actual Windows which has no protection at all (ezxcept for me and my
guard dog, Jess).
Now comes the norty part. When in your actual Windows on the other
computer, using this computer in Linux running the Samba network, I
cannot log in as root - and when I log in as bob, to my horror I
discover that all the Windows drives become read-only. I can read them
and copy them, but I can't change them. I am cut off in my prime.
I can change the permissions to the Mime (as root), but when I try
to change the permissions on an actual Windows file to bob, I get a
Linux message telling me that I don't have sufficient access. Root
isn't enough access? Is there a super-root, or a flying red fuck?
If I cut my losses and COPY the drive into Linux, there is no
problem, bod gets ful laccess on the network... but then Windows can't
access the copy.
My question is: can I change a mime link to have other than
root/root access (owner = root, group = root), or are all mime links
locked to root? I don't mean the link... I mean the *actual* file
behind the link.
Basically, what I want to do is use the Linux machine as a gateway
with no access to the Windows machine, while giving theWindowsmachine
TOTAL access to the Linux machine.
PS: Linnucks seriously gives me the shits. Whenever I try to do
something a little bit interesting, it locks up. Being Linnucks it
*nearly* workls - only *some* of it locks up but invariably, to clear
the lockup I have to reboot. It's worse than Win98! Since I started
using it, I now love Windows. Bill Gates is my hero. What a nice man.
I'm tempted to buy a hardware firewall/router, use Windows, and to
hell with fucking Linnucks and its useless amateur-hour programmers.
Bloody uniwankers...
Brenton tells me that KDE has ben bought by Novell. Maybe that'll
cure it... it sure needs someone with talent, and a professional
attitude to making their half-finished programs work properly (like
Windows).
Regards,
Bob
