To all people in this debate:

I suggest that it is impossible for there ever to be anything
meaningful argument about the rights and wrongs of homosexuality.

The devout Christian argument:

The Bible says that homosexual acts are sinful and it says that all
sins are wrong. I believe the Bible. Therefore homosexual acts are
wrong.

The human argument:

Homosexual acts by consenting adults give pleasure to the people doing
them and do not affect the happiness of anyone else. I believe that it
is right to try to make people happy and wrong to deliberately make
them unhappy. Therefore homosexual acts are not wrong.

I don't see how these two points of view can ever be reconciled,
because they start from different basic premises. If I pick up some
book and say "from now on, everything written in this book it right",
you can't argue against me, because I haven't used any kind of
argument.

Ultimately, it seems to me, the Christian viewpoint is that "The word
God is always right. The word of God is written in the Bible."

If somebody really believes this as a cast iron article of faith, it
seems, sadly, that no appeals to their better nature will change that.

It would be nice to think that, at some point in the distant future,
everybody will simply try to promote happiness and eliminate suffering
in whatever way is appropriate to the particular society in which they
live.

Sadly, I don't see this happening, and much of the world will continue
to cling to the half remembered, heavily filftered and misinterpretted
opinion of a small group of men about what would best promote happiness
in small middle eastern stone age villages.
