On the 14/06/96 10:57, Bob waffled to Dieter.. Hello Bob, DM> Maybe. Does your BIOS support LBA ? BL> Yes. A good start. DM> If not, you can get a VLB that supports large HDD's - it DM> "patches" in to the HDD calls and substitutes its own code. Or DM> someat similar. BL> Is this the infamous disk mangler? No - disk mangler is different. It's a software rather than a hardware/firmware implementation. BL> But my BIOS knows about LBA, so BL> where does that leave me? Do I need a special VLB board or just an BL> ordinary one. Ordinary IDE card should do fine. As I see it, all the IDE card basically is an addressed port, with the disk commands such as sector selection, etc, already been processed by the BIOS and then passed to the HDD for actioning. Just remember, the LBA and standard geometry are not compatible. Back everything up, select LBA, and then partition/format. If there are any problems, they should show up at the format stage. BL> I need the VLB controller anyway to add CD. I notice that EIDE BL> quad speed is down to $120 and I'm tempted.... DM> Tempt your self - temptation may never pass again. BL> The one thing I know about computers is that it's always cheaper BL> next month. I don't really need a CD or 16Mb of RAM or a big drive and BL> Win95... but the big drive is closer than most. I would not have BL> believed it was possible to store 400Mb! Considering a "suite" can take that much and more, it's hardly surprising these days. Dieter ...
