     Obviously your experience and training is exactly opposite to mine!  We
do agree about performance of the full version, but possibly for different
reasons.
     There is one detail to consider about base vs center loading.  Current
is higher at the feedpoint, so there will be greater IR loss in the base
loading coil.
     If there were no loss in the coils or conductors, I suspect that there
would be little difference between either configuration and the full version.
     But what if there was a difference of 3 dB?  That is only a half of an

Unit, which is a reasonable trade for the convenience of a reduced-size
antenna.  This might make all the difference for a weak station, but a
stronger station will come along any minute!
