Just for interest, on at least one internal modem there is a real 16550 chip 
-- Sportster 2400 with an 16550AFN hiding under the speaker.  It was 
originally an Exar 16450 but was replaced by a NS16550AFN when the modem was 
repaired after the computer power supply fried.
