Hi all (and one, as the case may be),
I had just-about convinced
myself that Win98 had pretty good security. Using the Linux box on
the network, I tried to break into the Windows drives without success.
If I set the "shared" parameter as read-only, it really worked.
Then I decided to see if I could network the Win-GDI printer from
Linux (without success, bloody thing!) and horrors!... part of the
network was a new drive named PRINTER$, and when I had a look, it was
the windows\system directory! I had denied access to C:\, and here was
C:\windows\system with its neck laid on the block.
If you want to break into Windows, just network a printer from
Linux! And once you have access to the windows\system directory, you
can write your own rules.
It seems that the Uniwanker who wrote printer networking, found a
way to tell Windows to give him access to the system! I haven't tried,
but it should be a simple matter to open up the registry using win.ini
and system.ini, and from there... tomorrow, ze vorld!
Bloody hell! Bloody Windows...
Regards,
Bob
