That's the weird part - so have I! I backed up the Win98 drive
(formatted FAT32) using Samba with no problem at all. I can delete,
copy, move, drag-and-drop, I can even *open* Winword.exe using Samba,
but for some reason beyond me, I can't save ordinary text files in
Word 2000 (Word7 or Word6) format. Even if I create it, I can't save
it to the Samba FAT drive... but I can use Word2000 to save in WfW
format (Word5 format), no problem.

I've isolated the problem to Word6/7 format... not actually Word
200 itself. What is it about the Word6/7 format that makes Samba barf?

The only other problem I find with Samba, is that if I shut down the
Linux box with Samba still running, it locks the Win98 network. Samba
protects itself against the Windows box failing, but apparently it
does not issue a warning when *it* closes down... and of course
Windows sucks anyway.

So far as I am concerned (the Word7 format thing apart), Samba *is*
fabulous. It's a bastard to set up (too many variables poorly
explained), but I'm actually running Windows programs stored on the
Linux box! It gets really confusing... but it works!

Regards,
Bob
