I don't know if you mentioned which version of NT you are using, but many
commands and the command interpreter itself (cmd.exe batch language) became
more powerful in Windows 2000 than in predecessors. Just type /? after a
command to see its options, or look up the command in help.

If you can't do what you want with dir, sort, find, etc., you can certainly
do it with vbscript or jscript. Both of these are included in Windows 2000
and XP. Both support regular expressions, string manipulation, and file
system functions. I think especially VBScript is good for this sort of
thing, is pretty easy to learn, and has a lot of information about it
available on the Web.
