subject: Cheap RAM

BG> Wait just a bit longer. Quads are now only $68 inc (dealer).

BL> Thieving bastards. If I wait too long, they'll stop selling
 BL> them.

BG> Quite likely. Tried buying a 2X drive these days? Even the 6X
BG> and 8X models' prices are dropping faster than Teddy's
 BG> knickers...

  Cruel, Bill...

 BL> What's the latest on 16Mb RAM?

BG> RAM prices are so volatile now, that by the time I receive the
BG> latest price lists, they're already out of date! The most
BG> recent price I have though, is $187 dealer inc tax (so they're
BG> probably _retailing_ for that now, if not even less).

Geeze! I keep looking at those two empty 72-pin slots...

BL> When I looked in the computer it's a round disc with Lithium
BL> written on it, in a clever round socket mounted horizontally.
BL> It measures 3.2V and does not seem to charge up.
BG> I'm not at all surprised.

That makes up for me. I s[pent a day watching the bloody voltage do
bugger all.

 BL> My questions are these:

 BL> Is this a non-rechargable battery?

 BG> Yep.

  Now... I am not surprised!

BL> What voltage is it supposed to be?

BG> Bloody hell, I can't immediately recall the Lithium's voltage
BG> now; probably either 1V2 or 1V35 though (I'm sure that Rod will
BG> gladly look it up for you).

I actaully meant... it now reads 3.2V. Is that how it started in
life, or has it gone flat from 5V or something? The CMOS doesn't mind
the low voltage; it's just the bloody clock stops!

 BL> How much are they?

BG> Not dear, maybe only $5 or so. Why not just piss it off, and
BG> use an external NiCd battery pack, which will fit on the 4-pin
BG> connector which just happens to live near the existing Lithium
 BG> battery?

That what I did with the old 386. I put a battery pack on the back
of the cabinet and used all my old AA cells in it. If they were frech,
I used three, otherwise I used four. Anything over 4V worked okay.

BG> I'm not really fussed on disposable batteries which are
BG> soldered directly to the motherboard anyway.

This lithium thingie isn't soldered. It has its own nice little
socket, but 3.2V is just a bit low for the fucking clock. I've never
heard of a 3V Lithium battery (or a 5V one either, for that matter).
It sounds like a good idea, though.

Regards,
Bob
