If you do a HD auto-detect, you'll see that the Award BIOS gives you both
LBA and NORMAL options, even for drives which total less than 1024*16*63.

No, you'll need a card which supports both primary and secondary controller
addresses.  The one I use here does precisely that, as well as supporting
dual buffered 16c550 UARTs (not that it will make any difference to your
internal modem).  Mine is a VLB card, was supplied with EIDE drivers for
DOS and OS/2 (although OS/2 own IDE driver works just as well), and cost me
the grand total of just $23.00.  In fact it was so bloody cheap that I
would have felt guilty about chasing one up at dealer price, so I didn't
even bother.
