BL> I need the VLB controller anyway to add CD. I notice that EIDE
BL> quad speed is down to $120 and I'm tempted....

KR> where are you shopping - david jones? go out and get yourself a
KR> copy of the trading post - the lowest price in there is $85. i
KR> bought one for my neighbour a couple of weeks ago for $90 from
 KR> a place in chatswood.

BL> I wish you'd answered the technical question about big hard drives
BL> and VLB boards, and left the fluff.

sorry gov'ner, i aint had time lately for the heavy stuff, but do your
self a favour, if you are in the market for hardware, invest $1.50 in the
trading post, it is probably the best guide to bargains around.

BL> BTW, I just finished reading "Hope" BTW, and Bernie rambles on. I
BL> don't think Deighton is ever going to end it. He just picks up the
BL> story where he left it in the last book, and uses all his old
BL> characters to reveal secrets they've been keeping from each other for
 BL> fifty years...

 KR> [chomp]

BL> In fact, no one working for the British SIS actually works for the
BL> British. This has been known since 1927 but the DG, being British, was
BL> too polite to say anything about it.

many a true word, it certainly seems to have benn so since 1945 (:

BL> Curly, Larry and Mo.... soon on sale at your local bookseller (who
BL> also works for the KGB).

can we take it then that you didn't like it? deighton has always been
something of a formula writer, he seems to me to be approaching the end of
what he can wring out of this one. i think that there is always a tendency
to go a bit beyond the point where you should stop. it can be seen in a
lot of tv series, the best stop leaving you wanting more, but the majority
overstay their welcome.

i have been rereading that old cult book of the 70s, "zen and the art
of motorcycle maintenance". it has stood up to time reasonably well,
there are a few good quotes in it. i like the following:-

"the test of the machine is the satisfaction that it gives you.there
isn't any other test. if the machine produces tranquility its right. if it
disturbs you its wrong until either the machine or your mind is changed.
the test of the machine is always your own mind. there is no other
test."

for some reason, the character who goes loony trying to work out what
quality is seems to remind me of paul, come to that, after watching
"the madness of king george" i am forced to as whether rod
speed's piss is blue (:
