-> Yeah. I've heard that people can run without it, though I haven't tried it
-> much myself. I know that w98 sure didn't seem to care for doing that. :-)
Win 98 can only Efficently use 512 Meg of memory. Although you canuse
what you have above that for a Ram Drive. You need to get into the NT
core operating systems for use of more then that by the OS.
-> RJT> They're getting closer to some real fundamental limits, maybe, but
-> RJT> I think it'll be a while before we see them go away completely.
-> RJT> Some of the early units really stacked those platters up, and the
-> RJT> newer ones don't (as far as I know) use nearly as many. Maybe
-> RJT> they'll start doing that again? Go back to a 5.25" form factor?
-> RJT> With current technology that'd give you a *LOT* of storage, hard to
-> RJT> accomplish economically by any other means.
Avctualy they are still making significant progress in Platter Data
Density capabilities. The 3 1/2" HD still has a ways to go.
-> CA>> Blank CDs are often cheaper than floppies so we can get rid of
-> CA>> those too.
-> RJT> Floppies are still convenient for smaller amounts of data, and are
-> RJT> re-usable
I see those uses being replaced by the Flash Cards. In fact that will
be speeded up by Card Readers not being installed in New Computers. And
for the Crossover "toy" the other day I saw a Combo Floppy/Card Reader
advertized at a local computer store for $39.
-> CA> CDRW are reuseable.
-> To a lesser extent, yeah.
They are still a little troublesome but I use them for most of my File
Transfers nowdays. Of courswe almost Nothing fits on a Floppy anymore.
Even the Antivirus definitions need several floppies now days.
