subject: sound card mic inputs

-> TW> I checked the SoundBlaster site yesterday and found this.

->  TW> ******

-> TW> The Sound Blaster Audigy and Sound Blaster Live! cards are designed
-> TW> for use with Electret microphones of 600 Ohms impedance.

-> 600 ohms? I don't think I've ever seen a reference to the impedance of these
-> thinga at all!

Radio Sheck lists theirs at 1000 Ohms. That is close enough to work.
600 Ohm is the Standard for a lot professional Microphones.

-> TW> (Sound Blaster Live! Platinum, Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1,
-> TW> Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum) include a jumper on the
-> TW> Live!/Audigy Drive which allows you to choose between dynamic and
->  TW> electret microphones.

-> Hm. Easy enough to deal with, once I figure out how it's wired. The mic
-> worked with an ESS1868-based card before, and also with an 1869-based card
-> (which has since died). The current card in the linux box is a SB16. Seems to
-> me that it's gotte be a pretty standard setup, if it's going to work with
-> several different cards like that. I've found a few tidbits of info about
-> interfacing to them, and have tried assorted things that worked out, so
-> little by little I'm getting there.

 The way I read the Soundblaster Web site the SoundBlaster did not
provide any Exication supply for eletret mocrophones.
You will just have to plug it in and Try. nothing to loose as you cannot
hurt either teh sound card not the Mike.
It just will either work or it won't. I am betting it wont.
But I will be Happy if you prove me wrong so I will have something to
put in the Memory banks that I can loose!! :-) :-)
