I've tried, among other things, running a command (that I know terminates correctly) via COMMAND /C, just before the EXIT. It's an intermittent, tricky problem; please see my reply to Charles Jennings, for more details. He's correct in stating that Protected Mode software can be problematic, but I've found that it's not the only cause.
