Perhaps you should check out "The Quest for the Historical Jesus" by the 
most reverand Dr.Albert Schweitzer.
It is a compendium of books written on the search for Jesus by Churchmen 
over the last 500 years and the book itself was written about 100 years ago 
and it is still in print.

You might also check out some of the books by Bishop Spong on the subject.
